When to Climb: Seasons on Japan's Famous Peaks
Almost every peak in this guide is a serious snow mountain in winter. The ordinary summer climbing season is short, and planning a trip to Japan's famous mountains starts with its dates.
Mount Fuji: early July to early September
Japan's highest mountain has an official climbing season that runs from early July to early September, when the trails are snow-free, the mountain huts are staffed and public transport runs to the fifth stations. Outside that window the summit is a winter mountaineering objective — cold, windy and genuinely dangerous — and the facilities are closed. Fuji's page in this guide carries the full article, including access and transport details.
The high Alps: July to October
On the 3,000-metre peaks of the Northern, Central and Southern Japan Alps — Hotaka, Yari, Kita and their neighbours — the staffed-hut season is roughly July to October. Snow patches can block routes well into July, and the first new snow can fall in September. The busiest weeks are late July, August and the autumn-colour weeks of late September to mid-October at lower altitudes.
North and south
Hokkaidō's season starts later and ends earlier: the Daisetsu range is usually climbed from late June or July into September, and it is famous for Japan's earliest autumn colours. At the other end of the country, Kyūshū's peaks — Kujū, Sobo and Miyanoura on Yakushima — can be climbed in most months, with spring and autumn the most comfortable; Yakushima's mountains are wet in every season.
Before you go
Season dates move with the snow each year, huts open and close on their own schedules, and volcanic peaks on the list — Asama, Aso, Sakurajima and others — can close without warning when activity rises. Treat this article as orientation only: read the individual mountain's page here, then confirm the current season, hut openings and any restrictions with official sources before you climb.
